Sundarar himself, travelled to many Shiva temples in South India and composed close to 1000 poems, which are compiled in the Thirumarai – a compilation of Poems on Shiva. His origin's can be traced back to Bharadwaj who is one of the famed Saptarishis. Sundarar was an 8th century poet from Thirunavalur, Tamil Nadu, and one of the Nayanars - the Shiva bhakti poets of Tamil Nadu. Upon realizing Shiva’s true form, Sundarar composed this Thevaram, lamenting continuously to Him, “How can I not be yours?” The first three thirumurais are given by Thirugnana.
